Motorcycle Gear Shifting Pattern
Normal Gear Shift Pattern:
- Higher number: Shift up
- Lower number: Shift down
- Neutral: Located between first and second gear

Standard Gear Shift Pattern (Post-1976 US Models)
- Gear shifter on the left
- Brake controls on the right
- Higher number means shifting up
- Lower number means shifting down
- Neutral between first and second gear
Sequential Gear Shifting
- Can only change one gear at a time
- Cannot shift from first gear to third gear (more than one gear) in one stroke
- Cannot shift down below first gear
Shifting Pattern
1. Neutral to First: Press gear shifter down
2. First to Neutral: Lift and let it slip out of first gear
3. First to Second: Lift firm in a full single stroke (bypasses neutral)
4. Second to Neutral: Press down and let it slip out of second gear
Shifting Multiple Gears
- To shift from first gear to third gear, lift firm twice
- Always shift one gear at a time
