Countersteering
Countersteering is a motorcycle riding technique that involves intentionally steering the bike in the opposite direction of the desired turn. Simply put, it means pointing the bike's handlebars in the opposite direction of where you want to go
BY WOR HENGCHAISRI, December 18, 2024
When a motorcycle reaches a certain speed, its front and rear wheels naturally align, creating a virtual "solid wheel." When you apply countersteering input, the bike responds by leaning in the opposite direction of the turn. For example:
- When turning right, the bike initially leans to the left.
- When turning left, the bike initially leans to the right.
How to Countersteer:
1. As you approach the turn, focus your eyes on the exit point and look in the direction you want to go.
2. Apply gentle pressure downward and forward on the handlebar on the same side as the direction of the turn (e.g., for a left turn, press the left handlebar).
3. As the bike begins to lean at your desired angle, release the pressure on the handlebar and smoothly lean your body in the direction of the turn.
Countersteering is a powerful technique that demands respect. If you continue to apply pressure, the bike will continue to lean, potentially leading to loss of control. To master countersteering, follow these best practices:
- Apply gentle pressure to the handlebars.
- Release the pressure once the bike reaches the desired lean angle.
By following these guidelines, you will be able to harness the power of countersteering and take your motorcycle riding skills to the next level.
