Mastering the Clutch
A Simple Trick for New Riders!
BY WOR HENGCHAISRI, December 6, 2024
Operating the clutch can be a daunting task for new riders.
However, with a straightforward technique, you can gain better control and confidence. Understanding the Clutch The key to smooth clutch operation lies in recognizing the "play zone" and the "clutch biting point."
The play zone refers to the range of motion between the clutch lever's fully disengaged positions and clutch biting point.
The clutch biting point marks the spot where the clutch begins transmitting power to the rear wheel, propelling the bike forward.
A Simple Exercise to Master the Clutch
1. Divide the clutch lever's range into five positions, with number three being the middle point (likely the clutch biting point).
2. When releasing the clutch, count and ease slowly: "one, two, threeeeeeeee, four, five."
3. Briefly pause at position three, allowing the clutch to engage smoothly. Note: The clutch biting point may vary. You might pause at that position instead of position three.
By following this technique, you will be able to:
- Develop a smoother, more controlled clutch release
- Avoid sudden, jerky movements
- Build confidence in your ability to operate the clutch
